Portrait of Mariia Yuneva

Mariia Yuneva

Senior Principal Investigator

Mariia uses the latest models and technologies to understand the metabolic mechanisms that drive aging and age-related diseases, including cancer.

About

Mariia’s research is focused on uncovering metabolic interactions at the cellular, tissue, and whole-organism levels using innovative new models and technologies. With this knowledge, she hopes to support the development of metabolism-based strategies to extend lifespan, improve healthspan, and counteract age-related pathologies.

Mariia joined Calico from the Francis Crick Institute, where she led a research team for 10 years focusing on the metabolic vulnerabilities of tumors. She utilized techniques such as stable isotope tracing, mass spectrometry imaging, and spatial transcriptomics to uncover how tumor metabolism is influenced by genetics, tissue of origin, and the tumor microenvironment. Her work identified several therapeutic targets and provided key insights into targeting cancer’s metabolic pathways.
