Position description:

The Head of Translational Development will be responsible for advancing Calico’s science from research to early clinical development. This person will be expected to exert broad influence across the organization, both scientifically and strategically, including contributing to the advancement of future clinical development programs. This individual will possess strong leadership skills, including the ability to develop talent, lead a development organization, and will have demonstrated a track record for successful delivery of small and/or large molecule therapies into clinical trials. The successful individual will join a dynamic, enthusiastic, interdisciplinary and collaborative team of innovative scientists who are employing state-of-the-art technologies to elucidate mechanisms underlying age-related diseases and aging itself, and discovering new opportunities for therapeutic intervention.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and strategic input to project teams in areas such as developing target product profiles; selecting, validating and developing clinical biomarkers; understanding PK/PD relationships
  • Provide clinical perspectives to preclinical sciences and strategically guide IND-enabling studies that will support clinical plans
  • Relate science/mechanisms of action to expected clinical profile in diverse therapeutic areas
  • Contribute to the utilization of human genetic information in clinical drug development
  • Define criteria for medical needs and selection of novel targets
  • Provide leadership to and support the success of new and existing collaborations/alliances with academic institutions and pharma/biotech companies
  • Work with senior leadership to help represent the company as a senior translational/medical spokesperson at appropriates scientific, medical, regulatory business and other professional meetings

Candidate requirements:

  • MD and/or Ph.D. degree
  • 15 years of drug development industry experience
  • Basic science and clinical research experience in a medical specialty with a proven track record of quality publications
  • Strong track record in translational medicine including hands-on experience taking small molecules and/or biologics through preclinical development into the clinic
  • Knowledge of applied research sufficient to understand how translational science enables the evolution into Clinical Development
  • Experience with large molecule and small molecule candidate selection
  • Understanding of clinical evidence base and active research guiding the use of molecular markers in patient selection
  • Experience overseeing selection and use of animal models to define clinical indications
  • Working knowledge of genetic/genomic and bioinformatics technologies and their application to translational approaches
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external multi-disciplinary research and development teams
  • Experience providing input into therapeutic target selection and validation
  • Experience developing novel approaches to clinical development in partnership with the FDA
  • Ability to oversee collaborations with academic investigators, industry partners, and CROs
  • Extensive contact and well-developed relationships with the academic scientific community and with regulatory agencies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities
